The report covers innovation, sustainability, operational efficiency, and more!
Biorigin, founded in 2003, specializes in yeast-based biotechnological processes, focusing on the food industry, pet food, and animal nutrition, contributing to nourishing the world.
Biorigin’s natural-origin ingredients enhance food flavor and promote healthier diets by reducing sodium, sugar, and fat. The company develops solutions for pets that improve palatability, nutritional value, and food functionality, contributing to overall gut and immune health. For producers, it offers animal nutrition and health solutions focused on efficiency, productivity, and the well-being of livestock, such as poultry, swine, fish, and ruminants.
Biorigin continues to build a path driven by innovation, quality, productivity, and efficiency, maximizing the benefits of yeast fermentation and developing the best solutions to create flavorful and successful recipes in partnership with its clients.
Reinforcing its commitment to transparency and socio-environmental responsibility, the company has published its Annual Sustainability Report, highlighting the 2023/2024 season. The document presents data on Zilor and Biorigin’s initiatives from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. Check out the key highlights in this article:
BIORIGIN’S PERFORMANCE
Zilor achieved the highest net revenue in its 77-year history, reaching a record R$ 3.487 billion, representing an 8.3% growth compared to the previous harvest. Biorigin contributed 17% of this result, totaling R$ 604.6 million in net revenue.
The Biotechnology Unit operates with a highly export-oriented profile, with approximately 90% of production destined for more than 60 countries, serving markets in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
In the 2023/2024 harvest, Biorigin achieved a total production of 38.1 thousand tons, with 22.7 thousand tons allocated to the pet food and animal nutrition segments and 15.4 thousand tons for the food industry.
Regarding sales volume, a total of 32 thousand tons was sold, of which 12.4 thousand tons were for the food industry and 19.6 thousand tons for pet food and animal nutrition.
An investment of R$ 70 million was approved for the Quatá unit to expand its global presence and production capacity. This project is part of Biorigin’s strategic growth plan and will be implemented over the next three years, bringing increasingly innovative and sustainable solutions.
INSTITUTIONAL
Biorigin believes in an organizational culture based on knowledge sharing and team development, currently employing 468 collaborators, 32% of whom are women.
Today, 40% of Biorigin’s leadership positions (coordinators and managers) are held by women, and 23% of operational leadership is female.
In addition, the company maintains approximately 454 active suppliers and has partnerships with 44 universities, research institutes, and laboratories in Brazil, as well as 22 international partners abroad.
During the 2023/2024 harvest, Biorigin reported zero fatalities, zero serious accidents, and zero incidents requiring mandatory reporting, achieving a zero-incident rate across all these categories.
SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS
The company is committed to environmental management initiatives, promoting actions to reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while increasing renewable energy sources and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources and biodiversity protection.
The biogenic carbon cycle, derived from sugarcane fermentation—the raw material used to produce yeast and yeast extract—is a naturally sustainable process. During manufacturing, biogenic CO₂ is released and reabsorbed by sugarcane plantations, forming a neutral cycle of raw material. In the 2023/2024 harvest, Biorigin’s biogenic carbon emissions were 14 times higher than non-biogenic ones.
Regarding emission reporting, for the eighth consecutive year, Biorigin was awarded the Gold Seal in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program for disclosing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions inventories, verified by a third party by ISO 14064-3:2007 (SGS).
Another highlight is the generation of clean and renewable electricity: 100% of the electricity used by Biorigin comes from renewable sources, as well as 100% of the steam used in operations at the Quatá Unit and 97% globally (Biorigin Global). All electricity and steam consumed are generated from Zilor’s agro-industrial production process.
Additionally, 25% of the waste generated is sent for recycling and reuse, and 15% of the water used in our production process is reused.
In 2024, we launched the Biorigin +Sustainable 2030 Program, aiming to mobilize knowledge, innovation, and technology to sustainably promote health and well-being for people and animals. The program is structured around Safe Supplier, Sustainability, and Product Quality. This initiative outlines actions, goals, and targets for the coming years, strengthening our commitment to sustainability.
The excellence of Biorigin’s work is proven by the certifications obtained and renewed over the years, reaffirming its commitment to quality and sustainability:
